چکیده

Sir, Segni et al. (Archives, 1977, 52, 549) reported the prevention of hyperbilirubinaemia in premature infants by bucolome. The effect of bucolome on hyperbilirubinaemia in Gilbert's syndrome was well established by observation ofabout 30 cases ofthesyndrome(Yamamoto et al., 1974). However, as for the mechanism of the effect, we found that bucolome showed no induction of liver microsomal enzymes (Adachi and Yamamoto, 1976) but did show a strong tendency to dissociate bilirubin from serum albumin (Yamamoto and Adachi, 1974). This dissociation was shown in vivo in Gunn rats, and in vitro using human albumin and red cells. We believe, therefore, that although bucolome is useful in cases of Gilbert's syndrome, it should not be further tried in premature infants.

Bucolome in prevention of hyperbilirubinaemia in preterm infants.

Fifty preterm babies were randomly assigned to a group given oral bucolome (30 mg/kg per day for 5 days) and a control group. Serum bilirubin levels of the treated infants from day 4 onwards were consistently lower than those of the control infants. 3 of the 25 control infants (but none of the 25 treated infants) had bilirubin levels greater than 18 mg/100 ml (308 mumol/l) and required exchange...

The Effect of Facilitated Tucking (FT) During Venipuncture on Duration of Crying in Preterm Infants

Abstract Introduction Humans in the last trimester of gestation are assumed to be in a pain-free environment in the womb, but those neonates who are born preterm often spend weeks in the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and undergo numerous painful procedures as part of their routine care. Materials and Methods In this semi-experimental study, 70 preterm infants born at average 32 to 36 week...

Comparison of the effect of Nutrition in Kangaroo Mother Care and Supine Positions on Gavage Residual Volume in Preterm Infants

Background: Feeding intolerance is a major concern in preterm infants. Appropriate position during feeding is one of the interventions that nurses can exploite in order to improve the feeding tolerance in preterm infants. Aim: Comparison of the effect of nutrition in the kangaroo mother care and supine position on gavage residual volume in preterm infants. Methods: Thisrandomized single-blind c...

The Effect of Non-Nutritive Sucking on Weight Gain and Length of stay in Preterm Infants

Background: Preterm infants frequently experience oral feeding difficulties due to undeveloped oral- motor skills and lack of coordination between sucking, swallowing and breathing. Infants’ ability to orally consume all feedings while maintaining physiological stability and weight gain is necessary for their discharge. Aim: The effect of non-nutritive sucking on weight gain in preterm infants....
